Two of Malayalam cinema’s biggest icons, Mammootty and Mohanlal, reunite onscreen in director Mahesh Narayan’s upcoming spy thriller Patriot, which releases in theatres on May 1, 2026. Seeing the duo together onscreen is, of course, one of the film’s biggest draws, and they are set to give audiences a treat with a special promotional chat as part of Patriot’s release strategy.
Mammootty and Mohanlal got together for a conversation that goes beyond just discussing their upcoming release. Called Patriot Legends Unite, this special video segment will be streamed exclusively on JioHotstar on April 23, 2026.
Patriot is Mammootty’s first release since his health scare. In fact, the actor took an 8-month break from the filming to focus on his recovery. The film follows a surveillance conspiracy as its core plot, and has the likes of Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara, Darshana Rajendran, Rajeev Menon and Revathi also on its cast. It was initially announced for an April 23 theatrical release, but was then pushed ahead by a week.
Patriot is, no doubt, spoken about for bringing the two biggest stalwarts of Malayalam cinema together again, but Mammootty has often said that their casting was purely character driven and not a bait for audiences. The script, he reiterated, is the hero of the film. Patriot has been shot across locations in Kochi, Hyderabad, Delhi, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom.
A revenue sharing dispute with exhibitors in Kerala was recently ironed out, with the latter opposing the producer’s demand for 60:40 share in the first couple of weeks. While the parties involved have worked out their differences, paving the way for the film’s release, it is notable that every now and then there are reports of an increased share for producers, especially with big-ticket releases.
