The global spy network is now formally operational again. Prime Video will release the much-anticipated second season of Citadel today, May 6, 2026. Three years have passed since the release of the high-stakes, big-budget drama, and in the realm of espionage, that's long enough for multiple governments to fall and for at least 12 memory-wiping serums to end their lifespan.

It's okay if you don't remember why Richard Madden became so agitated in 2023. Get ready for seven episodes today with this clinical, no-nonsense rundown of Season 1's mayhem and the treachery that sets the stage for Season 2.

Eight years before the events of the series, a worldwide spy agency called Citadel gradually eliminated its operations. Manticore, a mysterious organisation supported by the eight richest families in the world, was responsible for the crime. The elite of Citadel, including Richard Madden's Mason Kane and Priyanka Chopra Jonas' Nadia Sinh, were ambushed while on a mission in the Italian Alps aboard a high-speed train.

To keep the agents from being compromised and potentially divulging sensitive information, Citadel's "backstop" mechanism was activated, erasing their memory remotely. As a result, Mason became Kyle Conroy, a suburban dad from the suburbs. The Spanish restaurant manager Charlotte Vernon was Nadia's alter ego. After Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci) showed up to remind them, neither of them knew they were expert killers.

In the first season, the "X-Case"—a briefcase that held the identities of all the remaining Citadel agents as well as the codes for every nuclear weapon on Earth—was the centre of attention. The true drama wasn't the nukes—it was the laundry list of secrets that Kyle/Mason and Nadia were holding from each other. They finally regained their skills and joined forces to stop Manticore's Dahlia Archer (Lesley Manville).

Nadia, the "Secret Child", disappeared for a whole year prior to the fall. She secretly was birthing Asha, her daughter with Mason, in Valencia; it was revealed.

Mason had ordered a memory wipe on Celeste (Ashleigh Cummings), a fellow agent, years ago because she suspected that Nadia was a mole, and this episode reveals the betrayal involving Celeste. Mason did it to "protect" Nadia, but it's ironic since Kyle Conroy's wife and mother-to-be, Celeste (now known as Abby), was a memory-wiped lady.

Season one's "Secrets in the Night Need Early Rains" was the most devastating episode of the whole series yet. The show subtly suggested throughout the season that Nadia could be the betrayer. It wasn't her, as Mason Kane was the mole.

Devastated by Nadia's departure and persuaded by his wicked mother, Dahlia, Mason relinquished the keys to the kingdom. Citadel was indeed responsible for the bombing that killed his father, as Dahlia had persuaded him. Mason, consumed by grief and the drive to find Nadia, revealed to Dahlia the information that Manticore needed to bring down the organization.

Mason injected himself with a "memory vial" in the last moments of Season 1, restoring full access to his history. Now that he's had a flashback, he realises he was the one who brought down his organisation. However, he decides to keep quiet about it, which leads him into a life of betrayal.

The aftermath of the nuclear core heist is where Season 2 leaves off. Dahlia is still a major threat, even though she pretended to die in a house explosion to escape Manticore's fury over her failure.

The complete seven-part series will premiere on May 6, 2026. Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Richard Madden are all returning to their roles. Jack Reynor, Lina El Arabi, and Matt Berry are the newest additions to the cast.

The official synopsis states that the agents will have to assemble a new team of operatives to confront a "terrifying new threat" that arises from the ashes of the worldwide conspiracy.

Without a question, Mason's inner conflict will be the season's core concern. Currently, he is juggling the memories of two people: Mason Kane, the "traitorous" spy, and Kyle Conroy, the "good" parent. Mason's history is rapidly catching up with him, particularly because Nadia and Bernard still perceive him as a hero.

Set your reminders for later today. The bridge between the past and the future is about to get a lot shorter.
