Directed by Kyle Balda (Minions: The Rise of Gru) and penned by Emmy-winner Craig Mazin (The Last of Us), the film is adapted from Leonie Swann’s beloved 2005 international bestseller, Three Bags Full. The narrative revolves around George Hardy (Jackman), a good-natured, Irish shepherd, whose nighttime routine included reading classic detective novels aloud to his flock, even though he reckoned they understood nothing and only cared for his voice. Turns out, they not only understood every word, but also gained a fair grasp of the rules of deduction, forensic science, and criminal psychology.
When George is then mysteriously found dead in his pasture, his flock sets out to solve the crime. The Sheep Detectives blends a live-action human cast with state-of-the-art animal animation. The cast includes Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, and Hong Chau, while the voice cast brought together Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Chris O'Dowd, and Regina Hall.
Clocking in at a tight 110 minutes, the film has been praised by reviewers as a delightful, old-school piece of entertainment that combines the eccentric charm of Paddington with the mystery of a classic Agatha Christie novel.
