Rakasa was the feature film debut of Manasa Sharma, who had earlier made the successful web series Bench Life. The film was bankrolled by Niharika Konidela and along with Umesh Kumar Bansal. The plot of the film revolves around Sangeeth’s character Eera Babu, a US returnee, who is intent on marrying his childhood sweetheart.

However, once back, he finds out that she is all set to marry a guy her family had found for her. Eera Babu tries his best to scuttle the wedding plans, but has little to no success. Frustrated, he seeks solace in alcohol, only to then end up falling asleep in a deserted fort that’s believed to be haunted. Can Eera Babu find a way back home, or will he be stuck in the fort? That is what the film explores.

During its theatrical run, critics had noted that what worked for the film was its comedy, much of which is shouldered by Sangeeth, with the rest handled by Getup Srinu and Vennela Kishore. However, they also pointed out that the film lacked novelty. Despite that, Rakasa had a fairly decent run at the box office. Should it make its way to OTT on May 1, it will be a blow to the ongoing tussle between producers and exhibitors about sticking to an 8-week window between theatrical and OTT release, as is practised for Hindi films.
