Director Buchi Babu Sana took to social media on June 6, stating that he and his team have taken cognizance of the furore surrounding leading lady Janhvi Kapoor’s objectification in his latest, Peddi. The Ram Charan led sports drama had been hailed for the actor’s performance, but also called out for the ‘insensitive’ handling of the romantic portions, featuring him and Janhvi. From the actress’ overtly-sexualised styling, camera angles focusing squarely on her bosom and midriff, and objectionable sequences of sexual assault, with a looming question about consent, audiences had ripped apart portions of the Buchi Babu film.

The filmmaker had addressed these issues in recent conversations with the Telugu media, claiming that his intention of portraying a playful dynamic between the lead pair misfired. He, however, took cognizance of the audience feedback about how problematic these sequences were and, earlier today, took to social media, stating that the team will make changes to the portions concerned.

Buchi Babu wrote, “As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously.”
The filmmaker said that the intention was never to objectify or disrespect any female character. “If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologize,” he added. Based on the feedback, Buchi Babu and team have decided to make changes to the portions concerned. “We have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities,” he signed off, stating that every woman deserves to be respected, valued, and represented with dignity.

Changing portions in Peddi can, of course, only mean one thing – the film will go back to the chopping suite and Jahnvi’s portions will be excised. The problem with that, though, is that this will constitute a major chunk of her role in the film, leaving her with, perhaps, a blink-and-you-miss presence.
