Balan: The Boy Story – A boy looks for his mother once she goes missing after a murder. The main focus of this movie is his quest for closure following an uphill battle to survive and whether he will be able to see his mother again.
Balan: The Boy Review – With this psychological thriller, Manjummel Boys maker Chidambaram has delivered one of the best Malayalam films of 2026, solidifying his reputation as one of Mollywood's most talented young directors. With him, another brilliant contemporary storyteller, Jithu Madhavan, crafts a simple yet genuine narrative that whisks audiences away into an unsettling story about a mother and son who strive to protect each other from all odds. Balan: The Boy tells a compelling tale of finding hope and solace in each other amid all obstacles, whether in the right or wrong way, rather than the typical uplifting mother-son relationship that Malayalis have previously witnessed.
A still from Balan: The Boy
The fact these two protagonists stay in the audience's thoughts long after the ending is the most satisfying aspect of the film. The film's casting director, Ganapathi, deserves special recognition for his impeccable choice and the flawless execution of a profoundly raw and haunting tale.
Learning about a mother and son who have clearly endured a very upsetting tragedy is the main focus of the first half. Despite the ambiguous nature of their identity and past, viewers keep rooting for them to have a better life together. In the meantime, the second part explores the boy's difficult journey to protect his mother following a devastating event that separates them.
The filmmakers keep the audience intrigued right up to the very end by incorporating an emotional element that is made more powerful by being narrated from a child's point of view. It's also commendable that the makers were able to constantly deviate from the audience's assumptions of what would happen next, leading the latter to an emotionally gratifying climax.

With their performances, Farzana Palathingal and Adhisheshan K R embody the film's essence. Even their silence will make you feel numb in some way. The rest of the cast, which includes Tovino Thomas, Jean Lal, Beena Antony, and Girish AD, also consistently amaze the audience. Dolly June, the elderly woman brandishing a gun, and Muhammad Zinaan, who portrays the boy's teenage part, are two more real surprises from Balan: the Boy.
In addition to the technical crew, particularly Shyju Khalid's camerawork, Sushin Shyam's music does a fantastic job of evoking the emotions needed in this movie. Balan: The Boy is the perfect illustration of how even the simplest storyline can succeed when given the right treatment and actors. It's clear why an acclaimed filmmaker like Priyadarshan said that Balan: The Boy is the best movie he's seen recently. Simply because it undoubtedly succeeds on all fronts, providing the most fulfilling theatrical experience for the audience.
