Varahi Mallipamula is making her debut as a producer, writer, and actor with Impure, a film that started with an emotional family decision. The filmmaker revealed that the project was funded with money originally set aside for her wedding.
Born in Kakinada and raised in Pennsylvania, Varahi now lives in New York. Despite building a career in technology and earning degrees in Engineering and Journalism, she never gave up on her dream of making films. She wrote the first draft of Impure six years ago and continued working on it while balancing her day job.
The film tells the story of a woman whose wedding is called off after her future in-laws discover that she is not a virgin. Varahi said she spent years pitching the script but found it difficult to convince producers to back a women-centric film.
She credits Samantha and director Nandini Reddy’s Maa Inti Bangaram for giving her the confidence to release Impure in theaters. According to her, the success of such films proved that audiences are ready to support strong stories centered on women.
Telugu actress Yasha Muthuluri played the lead role. The film features music by Grammy-nominated artists Raja Kumari and Karan Pandav, while cinematographer Gnanasekhar VS captured Telugu locations beautifully.
After successful premieres in Los Angeles and New York, Impure is set for a limited Pan-India theatrical release on October 2. Stay tuned for more.
