Manjummel Boys filmmaker Chidambaram’s highly- anticipated third directorial venture, Balan: The Boy, has locked its worldwide theatrical release on June 19, 2026. Produced by KVN Productions and Thespian Films, Balan is being positioned as a pan-Indian release, with versions in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.

A Global Premiere at Cannes

Before it reaches general audiences, Balan: The Boy is making its international mark at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The film has been selected for a Market Screening at the Marché du Film on May 14, 2026.

Indications are that Chidambaram has moved beyond the survival-thriller genre of his previous hit to explore something more "deeply human" and artistic. While plot details remain unknown, the makers have described the film as a layered emotional drama. The story reportedly revolves around a teenage boy searching for his missing mother, following a turbulent childhood. The film follows his search for closure and answers about his past.

Chidambaram was joined by Aavesham maker Jithu Madhavan in writing the script of Balan, with music maker Sushin Shyam reuniting with the filmmaker yet again after Manjummel Boys

While the lead role of the title character, the boy, features a new face, rumors suggest significant extended cameos by Tovino Thomas, with Sreenath Bhasi. The film’s IMDB page lists Chandu Salimkumar on the cast.

As of now, Balan is set for a box office clash with Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Telugu film Maa Inti Bangaram and the Hindi film Cocktail 2, starring Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna and Kriti Sanon.
