Vijay Sethupathi’s Baththa has been receiving encouraging response from audiences following its theatrical release, with the film’s writing and human-centric treatment emerging as major talking points. Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the 1986-set drama takes a different approach to the gangster genre and revolves around a feared don whose life changes after an unexpected encounter with an eight-year-old boy.
The film’s core premise has also helped it stand apart from conventional gangster dramas. The protagonist, played by Vijay Sethupathi, is locked inside a washroom by the young child, setting off a series of events that gradually lead to a transformation in the don’s personality and outlook towards life.

Netflix bags Baththa OTT rights
From a trade perspective, Baththa has the advantage of a pre-release digital deal with Netflix. The film’s digital rights were sold to the streaming platform before its theatrical release, giving the project an important revenue component ahead of its arrival in cinemas. The Netflix premiere will follow the film’s theatrical run. It is expected to hit the streamer following a minimum 4-week theatrical run.

The theatrical response has now added further momentum to the film, with the writing being particularly appreciated for placing the human emotions of the characters above the usual gangster-film tropes. Instead of simply portraying the central character as a violent don, the film explores the circumstances that gradually push him towards a more normal way of life.
Vijay Sethupathi’s presence remains another key factor for the film, particularly given his ability to move between commercial entertainers and performance-oriented roles. Baththa once again sees the actor in a character-driven role, with the narrative giving him scope to portray the protagonist’s emotional and behavioural transformation.
For the makers, the combination of a positive theatrical response and a pre-release Netflix deal provides Baththa with a strong post-theatrical window. The film is expected to reach a wider audience when it eventually begins streaming on the platform.
