Prithviraj Sukumaran's Khalifa is one of the biggest Malayalam releases lined up for the 2026 Onam season. Directed by Vysakh and scripted by Jinu V. Abraham, the film is positioned as a high-voltage action crime thriller centred on gold smuggling, family legacy, revenge and power. It is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on August 20, 2026.

Cast  of Khalifa

Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Mambarakkal Aamir Ali, the central character and heir to a powerful gold-smuggling empire. The film has an extensive ensemble cast that includes:

Prithviraj Sukumaran – Aamir Ali

Mohanlal – Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Indrans, Shammi Thilakan, Sanju Sivaram and Manmadhan.

Malavika Sharma is the female lead of Khalifa, marking her debut in Malayalam cinema opposite Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Mohanlal's special appearance

One of the biggest talking points is Mohanlal's presence as Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, Aamir Ali's grandfather. Prithviraj has clarified that Mohanlal's role in this first instalment is largely an introduction to the character. The character is expected to have greater importance if the story continues into the proposed second part.

This also makes Khalifa another collaboration between Prithviraj and Mohanlal following L2: Empuraan, although their screen presence in this film is understood to be substantially different from their previous outing.

Story and genre

Khalifa revolves around Aamir Ali, a powerful figure connected to a gold-smuggling empire, and the conflicts surrounding his family's criminal legacy. The promotional material points towards a combination of gangster drama, revenge, action and family emotions. The film is officially being positioned as an action/crime thriller.

The film is also being presented as the first part of a two-part story, with the title Khalifa: The Ruler indicating that this instalment is expected to establish the characters and the larger world before potentially expanding the narrative in a second film.

Director and technical crew

Khalifa marks another collaboration between Prithviraj and director Vysakh, who previously directed him in Pokkiri Raja and Madhura Raja in different capacities of their careers. The screenplay is by Jinu V. Abraham, who is also backing the film.

Key members of the technical crew include:

Director: Vysakh

Writer: Jinu V. Abraham

Producers: Jinu V. Abraham, Suraj Kumar

Cinematography: Jomon T. John

Editor: Chaman Chacko

Music: Jakes Bejoy

Action choreography: Yannick Ben

The film was shot across multiple locations, including London, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kathmandu, Kerala, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai, giving it a sizable international canvas.

Release date and theatrical rollout

Khalifa is scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on Thursday, August 20, 2026, as an Onam release. The makers have announced that the first shows will begin at 9 AM worldwide, including Kerala, other Indian markets and overseas.

The film is expected to have a wide theatrical release across Kerala, besides releases in other Indian markets and overseas territories. Overseas cinema chains have already listed Malayalam-with-English-subtitles screenings in markets including Australia and the UK, indicating a broad international rollout. For the Kerala release, the film is being associated with Aashirvad Cinemas/Jiinu Abraham Innovations for distribution.

Certification

The film has received a UA 16+ certification, meaning viewers below 16 require parental guidance. This certification also underlines the film's action-oriented and intense content.  As of now, there is no officially confirmed OTT partner or streaming date for Khalifa.

Why Khalifa is important

The film comes with several major commercial advantages: Prithviraj as the lead, Vysakh's action-film credentials, Jinu V. Abraham's script, a large supporting cast, international production scale and Mohanlal's special appearance. It is also arriving during the crucial Onam period, traditionally one of Malayalam cinema's strongest theatrical windows.

The film's biggest attraction, however, could be the possibility of establishing a new gangster universe around Aamir Ali and the Mambarakkal family. With the first part reportedly serving as an introduction, the theatrical performance of Khalifa could determine how extensively the story is expanded in the proposed second instalment.
