Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty has received a special birthday surprise from his production banner, Mammootty Kampany, with the title and first-look poster of his upcoming film officially unveiled.
The announcement was made at midnight on September 7, coinciding with Mammootty's 75th birthday. The film, called Mela, marks the ninth production venture of Mammootty Kampany and brings the veteran superstar together with director Nithish Sahadev, best known for directing the successful Malayalam film Falimy.
The makers introduced the project with the tagline “Mammoottyude Mela”, promising a new world, a new avatar and a fresh chapter for the actor. The first-look poster has already caught the attention of fans, presenting Mammootty in an intense and rugged appearance. Dressed in a black shirt and dhoti and holding a machete, the superstar appears to be stepping into another striking mass-oriented character.
Nithish, who made an impressive debut with the Basil Joseph-starrer Falimy, later expanded into Tamil cinema with Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil. For Mela, Nithish has co-written the screenplay with Anuraj O.B. The project was launched with a traditional pooja ceremony in Kochi in July, while Mammootty joined the shooting schedule in August. The film has been shot in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, among other locations.
According to the details revealed earlier about the project, Mela is being positioned as a comedy action entertainer with humour playing an important role. Mammootty is expected to appear in a distinctly different avatar, adding further curiosity about what Nithish has planned for the Malayalam superstar.
The technical team includes cinematographer Jimshi Khalid, while the film is backed by Mammootty himself under the Mammootty Kampany banner. The collaboration is particularly exciting because it brings together one of Indian cinema's most versatile actors and a relatively young filmmaker who has already established his ability to connect with audiences through character-driven entertainers.
The title Mela also has an interesting connection with Mammootty's career. The actor had earlier appeared in the 1980 film of the same name directed by KG George. However, the new Mela has no connection to the earlier film and is being presented as an entirely new story and cinematic world.
With the first-look poster setting social media abuzz and the combination of Mammootty and Nithish Sahadev generating considerable curiosity, “Mela” has now joined the list of highly anticipated upcoming Mammootty films.
