Rajinikanth's much-awaited action entertainer "Jailer 2" is nearing Rs 40 crore in worldwide advance bookings ahead of its theatrical release on October 15. However, despite the strong pre-release momentum, the film's Hindi release has run into a distribution challenge, with major national multiplex chains reportedly reluctant to screen the dubbed version over a disagreement concerning its OTT release window.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, the sequel brings Rajinikanth back as the iconic Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The film has generated considerable interest among fans, with advance bookings gaining traction across several markets. According to recent trade reports, its worldwide pre-sales have moved close to the Rs 40 crore mark.

The advance booking performance points to strong opening-day potential for the film, which is scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide on October 15. However, its final box-office performance will depend on audience reception, occupancy levels and its ability to sustain momentum beyond the opening weekend.

Jailer 2 Hindi release confirmed, but multiplex concerns remain

The Hindi-dubbed version of Jailer 2 became the subject of uncertainty after reports suggested that it could miss screenings at major national multiplex chains, including PVR INOX and Cinepolis.

The issue reportedly stems from the makers' agreement for a four-week gap between the theatrical release and the film's digital premiere. National multiplex chains generally expect an eight-week theatrical window for Hindi releases, creating a potential conflict between the producers' streaming commitments and exhibitors' requirements.

However, the makers have since clarified that the Hindi version will release on October 15 as originally planned. Pen Marudhar Entertainment will distribute the film across North India. The clarification confirms the theatrical release, although it does not necessarily mean the film will be screened across every major multiplex chain.

The reported disagreement could affect the film's reach in the Hindi-speaking market, particularly if screenings at leading national chains remain restricted. The extent of its release through regional multiplex operators and independent theatres will therefore be important to watch.

Can the sequel match the first film's box-office success?

The 2023 release "Jailer" emerged as a major commercial success and strengthened Rajinikanth's box-office appeal across markets. The sequel carries considerable expectations, with its ensemble cast adding to the pre-release buzz.

Apart from Rajinikanth, "Jailer 2" features actors including Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan, among others. Nelson Dilipkumar returns as director, while Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music.

With the film set to open on October 15, the immediate focus will be on its opening-day worldwide gross and the response from audiences across languages. While the advance booking trend has offered an encouraging start, the Hindi distribution issue remains a factor to monitor as the film begins its theatrical run.
