Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 is gearing up for a massive opening at the global box office, with worldwide advance bookings crossing the Rs 50 crore mark ahead of its theatrical release on October 15.

Trade analysts are projecting an opening-day worldwide gross of Rs 120 crore to Rs 150 crore, putting the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial among the most anticipated Tamil releases of the year. The 2023 Jailer had a reported Day 1 worldwide gross of Rs 96.4 cr (Sacnilk). Will advance bookings and walk-ins get the sequel to twice that amount?

The strong pre-release business has raised expectations for the sequel, which arrives three years after the blockbuster Jailer. With Rajinikanth returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the film is banking on the superstar's enormous theatrical pull, strong domestic bookings and overseas market performance.

According to trade reports published on October 13 and 14, Jailer 2 has already crossed Rs 50 crore in worldwide advance bookings for its opening day, including blocked seats. The film's advance sales have continued to build momentum as the release approaches, with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala emerging as important domestic markets. Overseas territories are also contributing significantly to the pre-release business. In Karnataka, for instance, ticket rates have been hiked to Rs 1,000 for the early morning shows.

Can Jailer 2 beat Coolie?

The opening-day projections have placed Jailer 2 in contention for one of the biggest worldwide openings in Tamil cinema. Trade analysts have reportedly projected a worldwide opening of around Rs 125 crore, while more optimistic estimates suggest that the film could approach Rs 150 crore if ticket sales remain strong.

The benchmark is significant for Rajinikanth, whose previous film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, recorded a massive worldwide opening. Jailer 2 will now be looking to challenge that performance, although its final numbers will depend on show occupancy, spot bookings and the response across international markets.

The sequel's opening-day advance sales indicate strong audience interest, but the actual box-office performance will become clearer only after its theatrical release.

Hindi Release faces a multiplex hurdle

Despite the strong buzz in the South Indian markets and overseas territories, the Hindi-dubbed version of "Jailer 2" faces a distribution hurdle in North India. Major multiplex chains PVR INOX and Cinepolis are reportedly not screening the Hindi version because of a disagreement over the film's proposed four-week OTT window.

The limited access to major Hindi multiplex screens could affect the film's reach in the North Indian market, even as its Tamil version generates substantial pre-release interest. The extent of the impact will depend on the film's availability through other exhibitors and its performance in the markets where it receives a wide release.

Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 brings Nelson Dilipkumar back as writer and director, with Anirudh Ravichander composing the music. The film features a prominent ensemble cast, adding to expectations surrounding the sequel.

With worldwide advance bookings already exceeding Rs 50 crore and trade estimates pointing towards a Rs 120 crore to Rs 150 crore opening, all eyes are now on whether Rajinikanth can deliver another major box-office event when Jailer 2 arrives in theatres on October 15.
