Sumo Didi story
Jayant Rohatgi’s directorial debut, Sumo Didi, is based on the life of Hetal Dave, recognised as India’s first professional female sumo wrestler. Starring Shriyam Bhagnani in the lead role, the Hindi sports biopic chronicles the journey of a young woman who challenges societal expectations and pursues her dream in a sport that has little recognition or infrastructure in India.
The film follows Hetal, a middle-class girl from a conservative household, as she navigates social prejudices, patriarchal mindsets and a lack of opportunities. Her struggles are compounded by the body-shaming she faces as an overweight woman in a society that often discourages women from pursuing unconventional ambitions.
Sumo Didi review
One of the biggest highlights of Sumo Didi is Shriyam Bhagnani’s commitment to portraying Hetal Dave. Playing a professional sumo wrestler required more than simply getting into character, as the actor had to undergo a significant physical transformation to convincingly portray the athlete.
Bhagnani also had the challenging task of learning both judo and sumo wrestling, two disciplines that require considerable physical preparation and technical understanding. The film even features her facing a professional sumo wrestler, making the authenticity of the sporting sequences particularly important.
The fact that the real-life Hetal Dave personally trained Bhagnani adds credibility to her portrayal. Dave’s involvement appears to have helped the actor understand the physical demands of the sport and the dedication required to become a professional athlete.
While Sumo Didi follows the familiar sports-drama formula of an underdog overcoming obstacles to achieve success, it brings a relatively unexplored sporting discipline to the forefront. Sumo wrestling, which is largely unfamiliar to Indian audiences, becomes the central attraction as the film traces Hetal’s journey from practising judo to competing in championships and seeking recognition on the international stage.
The makers deserve credit for choosing a subject that goes beyond the usual sports-biopic template. Sumo wrestling is not a sport that enjoys widespread recognition in India, and the film offers audiences an opportunity to understand the challenges faced by an athlete pursuing a discipline with limited domestic infrastructure and visibility.
However, the narrative largely follows a conventional trajectory. Hetal’s journey is presented through familiar stages of struggle, perseverance, setbacks and determination, making the overall storytelling somewhat predictable for viewers accustomed to sports dramas.
The effort invested in bringing this story to the screen deserves appreciation. Hetal Dave’s journey is not merely about winning championships; it is also about confronting the prejudices surrounding body image, gender and the freedom to pursue a dream that others may consider unrealistic.
The film remains engaging because of its unusual sporting backdrop. The sumo sequences and the protagonist’s efforts to establish herself in a largely unfamiliar discipline provide a degree of freshness to an otherwise recognisable underdog narrative.
More importantly, “Sumo Didi” draws attention to the struggles of athletes who pursue sports outside the mainstream. Beyond the sporting arena, Hetal’s story also raises questions about how society treats women who do not conform to conventional expectations of appearance, career and marriage.
Sumo Didi Verdict
Sumo Didi is a commendable attempt to bring Hetal Dave’s inspiring journey to a wider audience. Although the film relies on familiar sports-drama conventions, its subject and the relatively unexplored world of sumo wrestling give it a distinctive identity.
Shriyam Bhagnani’s physical transformation and the preparation involved in portraying a professional wrestler are among the film’s key strengths. For viewers who enjoy inspirational sports dramas and stories about people challenging societal barriers, “Sumo Didi” is worth a watch.
