Eyes series Review
Malayalam OTT has seen a lull in gripping thrillers since Kerala Crime Files Season 2, but director Manu Ashokan bridges that gap with a series that keeps viewers hooked for hours. By tackling the deeply unsettling theme of dangerous love and obsessive stalking, the show seamlessly blends investigative police procedural with the raw psychological impact on both victims and perpetrators. Its dark backdrop and timely subject matter tap into profound human fears while emphasising the vital need for safety.
Spurred by a surge in violent attacks by jilted lovers, police authorities mandate the creation of "Eyes"—a specialised team operating alongside an online app to prevent such crimes. Comprising psychologists Ayisha, Vidhya, and Tanvi, together with SI Tina Sebastin and Constable Justin, the unit works to protect stalking victims by monitoring perpetrators, studying their behaviour, and offering psychological intervention. The series centres on their delicate handling of high-stakes cases as they balance professional caution with their own personal struggles.
The antagonists in this series are ordinary individuals from all walks of life, driven by toxic obsession and an insistence on controlling their partners. The creators skilfully unpack complex psychological issues—including narcissistic personality disorder, clinical depression, delusional disorder, and childhood trauma—in layman's terms, paying close attention to the subtle, everyday forms of abuse predators inflict on victims. In doing so, the creators deliver an unequivocal message: relentlessly chasing someone after a clear "no" is not romantic—it is stalking, plain and simple.
The threat of control isn't limited to the show's victims; even members of the 'Eyes' team find themselves enduring similar domestic manipulation, reinforcing the chilling reality that predators don't fit a single profile. This is demonstrated by characters like the one played by Dev Mohan—a respected IAS officer who is deeply insecure and narcissistic behind closed doors—and a successful Bengaluru photographer masking an obsessive, delusional mindset. This nuanced character writing elevates the core theme, moving far beyond the clichés of traditional cinematic stalkers. That said, the narrative missed a chance to explore women as perpetrators, given that manipulation and the desire for control are not restricted to any one gender.
While the AI-powered app that tracks and predicts stalker behaviour feels slightly far-fetched, it never undermines the series’ stark depiction of stalking and romantic obsession. Sanjay–Bobby’s screenplay and Anjana Nayar’s story are thoughtfully crafted to remain both engaging and deeply relevant. The entire cast turns in strong performances, though Jaffer Idukki’s act is particularly haunting. Ultimately, Eyes is an emotionally demanding watch—not just for women, but for anyone who values personal autonomy and rejects control disguised as affection.
Eyes Verdict
This Malayalam web series starring Nikhila Vimal and Shruti Ramachandran offers an unnerving portrayal of romantic obsession and stalking.
