The release of Thalapathi Vijay's much-awaited Tamil film Jananayagan is expected soon with the film's censor process nearing completion. The latest development will clear the way for an official release date announcement after months of uncertainty surrounding the movie.
The film's certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was delayed following objections which led to legal proceedings between the makers and the certification body. According to industry sources, the remaining formalities are likely to be completed next week.
"We have received an update that the censor proceedings for Jananayagan will be completed by next week. The film is expected to release either later this month or in early August," sources said.
With the certification process in its final stages, all eyes are now on the producers, who are expected to announce the film's theatrical release date soon.
Directed by H. Vinoth, "Jananayagan" is one of the most anticipated Tamil films awaiting release. Apart from Vijay's massive fan following and the film's commercial scale, the project has attracted widespread attention as it will also be the farewell movie for the actor after being elected Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Censor delay
"Jananayagan" was submitted to the CBFC in December 2025 and was initially scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, 2026 during the Pongal festival. However, the film was referred to a Revising Committee following complaints that certain scenes allegedly hurt religious sentiments and portrayed the armed forces in an objectionable manner.
The unexpected twist brought the certification process to a standstill just days before its release, forcing the makers to pursue legal battle. The delay led to a legal dispute with the CBFC over the certification process.
Despite the setback, "Jananayagan" has continued to generate strong interest among exhibitors, distributors and overseas buyers. Trade circles expect the film to emerge as one of the biggest Tamil theatrical releases of the year, with strong demand anticipated in key international markets, including the Gulf, North America, the United Kingdom etc.
