Actor-filmmaker RJ Balaji’s Karuppu, starring Suriya in the lead, which was meant to be in theatres for Deepavali 2025 and had multiple postponements before finally zeroing in on May 14, 2026, is facing yet another hurdle. The film, produced by SR Prabhu had excellent advance bookings, but late on May 13, he tweeted that the morning shows on May 14 would stand cancelled owing to unforeseen issues.

These unforeseen issues, according to the buzz on social media, are finance related, with the makers apparently scrambling to sort it out and ensure that the distribution channels are opened at least for later shows on May 14. However, some netizens claim that the film is unlikely to release on May 14 and will open only on May 15. At the time of publishing, even 11.30 am shows were being cancelled. There are unconfirmed reports that shows in north India started, fuelling fears of rampant piracy.

Fans are, obviously, disappointed with this turn of events, especially those in the US and Canada, who travelled far and wide to make it to the late evening premiere shows. Despite the disappointment, though, they remain hopeful of a positive outcome, given that Simbu’s Maanaadu had faced a similar predicament and went on to do well at the box office. A few years ago, Kiccha Sudeep’s Kotigobba 3 was also delayed for the exact same reason, helping Duniya Vijay’s Salaga win this battle of the titans.

Karuppu is a fantasy action film in which Suriya plays a lawyer fighting corruption and injustice while possessed by a deity, according to reports. He is paired with Trisha in the film, which has music by Sai Abhyankar.
