The main character of Uyir is Ajeeb, a probationary sub-inspector assigned to the Dharmadam Police Station in the Kannur district. He looks into the murder of a migrant worker in Kerala. As the case compels Ajeeb to face unresolved childhood trauma, what starts out as a normal crime investigation gradually becomes personal for him. He is driven into a kind of grief and atonement as he gets closer to finding the culprit and the motive behind the crime.
Shruti Menon, Baiju Santhosh, Vineeth Thattil, Divya M Nair, Santhosh Trivikram, Shaju Sridhar, Srikanth Murali, Vinod Sagar, Athulya Chandra, Saiyami Kher, and Mahesh Shetty all have significant roles in Uyir. The film has been directed by Padmakumar, who is well-known for critically acclaimed and popular Malayalam films like Joseph and Shikar. Inspector Anshad developed the film's plot, and Shaji Marad and Nikhil K Menon wrote the screenplay for it.
Roshan Mathew has previously starred in a grim police drama based on actual events. In his 2025 film Ronth, which was directed by Shahi Kabir, the main characters — two police officers — attend to different situations while on a night patrol, making it another recent, highly regarded film in the same genre. This movie, which also has Dileesh Pothan, is also streaming on JioHotstar.
