G.D.N Story
The film is about Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, the inventor and businessman from Coimbatore, and how he developed his ideas and inventions into successful businesses. The movie begins with a young Doraiswamy being fascinated by a motorbike and how he manages to buy it from a British man. His passion for automobiles and his interest in electronic inventions are presented in an interesting manner.
The movie moves through different time periods, including the 1950s, when Doraiswamy expanded his business through bus services in Coimbatore. However, the film also shows how the British authorities were unhappy with his activities, with charges including tax evasion and even treason being levelled against him.
The movie also touches upon the claim that a Benz factory was supposed to be set up in Coimbatore but did not happen because of rival companies. Through these incidents, “G.D.N” attempts to tell the story of a man who was a pioneer in technology and innovation.
G.D.N Review
G.D.N is a sincere effort from director Krishnakumar Ramakumar, who has done a fine job in presenting the story in an accessible manner. The film does not approach the life of G.D. Naidu like a conventional biopic and instead adds commercial elements to make the story appealing to a wider audience.
However, some aspects of Doraiswamy’s life, particularly his second marriage and his association with Germany, needed more attention. These portions could have added more depth to the character and the overall narrative.
At the same time, the film will surely appeal to the common audience because of the way the story has been presented.
Performance-wise, R. Madhavan has done a good job as G.D. Naidu. He has effectively portrayed the character and carries the film well, particularly in the portions that showcase the inventor’s passion and determination. Dushara Vijayan, who appears as his second wife, also has a good role and makes an impression.
Priyamani, as his first wife, has a comparatively smaller role. Jayaram, as tax officer Ambalapara Krishnan, gets a good role and performs it well. Sathyaraj, who plays Doraiswamy’s accomplice, also makes his presence felt.
The technical aspects of G.D.N are another positive. The music by Govind Vasantha has an impact, while the cinematography and other technical departments are also good. The period setting and the different phases of Doraiswamy’s life have been handled effectively.
G.D.N Verdict
G.D.N is a sincere effort to showcase the contributions of a man who was once a pioneer in technology and innovation but is not remembered by many today. In that sense, the movie succeeds in bringing an interesting and lesser-known story to a wider audience.
Considering it as a biopic, perhaps the pace could have been a little slower, especially in certain portions where more attention to the character and his personal journey could have added depth.
Overall, G.D.N is a decent and sincere biopic that introduces the story of an unsung Indian inventor to a new generation, with R. Madhavan delivering a good performance.
