Today, the official trailer for Imtiaz Ali's next feature film, Main Vaapas Aaunga was unveiled. The trailer depicts a cross-generational and cross-border drama. Releasing in theatres around the world on June 12, 2026, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari, and it explores the complexities of human interactions over the ages.
The trailer teases a multi-layered story that weaves together modern relationships and the enduring pain of India's 1947 Partition. In the opening scene, an elderly character (Naseeruddin Shah) is on his deathbed and keeps saying he has to go back to the border town of Sargodha. Because of this unfulfilled desire, his relatives investigate a long-forgotten past that has persisted for 78 years.

Historical separation and contemporary living are juxtaposed in the film. While Dosanjh is heavily involved in connecting the historical events, Raina and Sharvari represent a contemporary couple in the story. The plot centres on a love story that survived 78 years after partition, asking whether it's possible to hold on to a loved one for so long without seeing them. Another line in the trailer compares unfulfilled love to a substance that prevents a person from dying in peace.
A personal narrative of love and longing that endured after the 1947 partition, Main Vaapas Aaunga was defined by Ali in a statement announcing the trailer launch. He tried to see these historical events through a modern perspective, and the screenplay reflects several tales he gathered from those who were there during the Partition.
Composer AR Rahman, lyricist Irshad Kamil, and Ali are all back together for this project. This collaboration has previously delivered several musical albums in Indian cinema.
