Malayalam actor Mammootty’s upcoming film Padayaatra, directed by veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, is set to hit theatres on December 4, 2026. The release date was officially announced on Wednesday, October 21, marking an important update for one of Malayalam cinema’s most anticipated projects.

The film brings Mammootty and Adoor together after a gap of 32 years. It also marks the fourth collaboration between the actor and the acclaimed filmmaker, whose previous films together include Anantharam, Mathilukal and Vidheyan.

Padayaatra is a period drama that features Mammootty as a doctor. The film’s trailer, released in September, offers glimpses of a socially relevant narrative set in a bygone era, with the story seemingly exploring changing human values and the relationship between a doctor and the people around him. The trailer also hints at a conflict involving an accusation of sedition against Mammootty’s character.

The film marks Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s return to feature filmmaking after a decade. Known for his distinctive cinematic style and acclaimed works, the National Award-winning filmmaker has generally avoided repeatedly casting the same actors. However, Mammootty has been an exception, with “Padayaatra” becoming their fourth film together.

The project is produced by Mammootty under his banner, Mammootty Kampany, and is the production house’s eighth film. Adoor Gopalakrishnan and writer K. V. Mohan Kumar have jointly worked on the story, screenplay and dialogues.

Apart from Mammootty, the film features Indrans and Grace Antony in prominent roles. The ensemble cast also includes Sreeshma Chandran, Alencier Ley Lopez, Jagadish, Nandu, Madhupal, Aliyar, P. Sreekumar and Zeenath. Shehnad Jalal has handled the cinematography, while Mujeeb Majeed has composed the music. Wayfarer Films, owned by Dulquer Salmaan, will distribute the film in Kerala.

The reunion has attracted considerable attention because of the legacy of Mammootty and Adoor’s earlier collaborations. Mathilukal and Vidheyan, in particular, remain significant entries in Mammootty’s filmography, with the actor receiving major acting honours for his performances in Adoor’s films.

With Padayaatra, the two veterans are set to revisit their creative partnership after more than three decades. The December 4 theatrical release will bring their latest collaboration to audiences, with expectations centred on Mammootty’s performance and Adoor’s distinctive approach to storytelling.
