Vijay Sethupathi’s critically-acclaimed Tamil thriller Maharaja is heading towards Hollywood, with the film set to be remade for an international audience. The development marks a significant milestone for Tamil cinema, with the 2024 blockbuster now attracting interest from a Hollywood agency for an English-language adaptation.
The development was confirmed by producer Sudhan Sundaram, who revealed that the makers were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights following the film’s success in China and its strong performance on OTT platforms.
The Hollywood team is currently looking to set up the project with an A-list actor, with production likely to begin next year, the producer was quoted as saying by Times of India.
Matthew McConaughey in the frame?
There has been considerable buzz around Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey potentially taking over the role played by Vijay Sethupathi. However, his involvement has not been officially confirmed.
Sudhan Sundaram clarified that McConaughey is among the actors being discussed, but the final casting will be confirmed by the Hollywood agency handling the project. “Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to,” the producer was quoted as saying, adding that the agency will reveal the official details.
If the casting materialises, McConaughey would be stepping into the central role originally played by Vijay Sethupathi, whose performance was one of the major highlights of the Tamil film.
Why did Maharaja attract Hollywood attention?
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja revolves around an apparently simple complaint involving a missing dustbin that gradually opens up into a layered revenge thriller. The film's non-linear narrative, emotional father-daughter relationship and dramatic twists helped it connect strongly with audiences.
The film was produced by Jagadish Palanisamy and Sudhan Sundaram under The Route and Passion Studios. Its cast also included Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas and Natarajan Subramaniam. Maharaja also found an audience beyond Tamil cinema. Its release in China became an important factor in drawing international attention, with Sacnilk figures cited by the producer putting its Chinese box-office collection at around Rs 91.65 crore.
The film's international reach, combined with its genre-friendly premise, appears to have opened the door for a Hollywood adaptation.
A major crossover for Tamil cinema
Hollywood remakes of Indian films are not new, but the development is notable for Tamil cinema, particularly because Maharaja is being taken up following its international reception rather than simply being adapted for another Indian language.
The Hollywood version is still in the early stages, with the studio, director and final cast yet to be officially announced. The project is expected to go on floors in 2027, according to producer Sudhan Sundaram.
For now, the biggest question remains who will step into Vijay Sethupathi’s shoes. While Matthew McConaughey’s name is generating considerable buzz, his casting remains unconfirmed.
