Nayanthara has joined the cast of Superstar Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated film Dharman, directed by Ashwath Marimuthu. The announcement brings the popular on-screen pair together again after five years, adding further star power to the ambitious project backed by Kamal Haasan.

The makers confirmed Nayanthara’s inclusion through an official announcement on social media on October 25. Welcoming the actress to the project, the production house shared the caption, "The aura is double," alongside a glimpse featuring the two stars. Nayanthara also expressed her excitement about the collaboration, referring to Rajinikanth as the "one and only Superstar".

The upcoming film marks their reunion after "Annaatthe" (2021). The duo has previously shared screen space in several films, including "Chandramukhi" (2005), "Kuselan" (2008), "Darbar" (2020) and "Annaatthe". Nayanthara also made a cameo appearance in the song "Balleilakka" from Rajinikanth's "Sivaji" (2007).

While the details of Nayanthara's character remain under wraps, her addition has increased anticipation surrounding the film. The makers have yet to reveal whether she will play the principal female lead or a character with a different significance in the narrative.

Rajinikanth plays a doctor in Dharman

"Dharman", which marks Rajinikanth's 173rd film as a lead actor, was officially announced in June 2026. The film's first-look material introduced the Superstar in the role of a doctor, with the tagline "The Deadly Doctor" hinting at a character that could combine medical expertise with an action-driven narrative.

The film is directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, who earned attention for his work on "Oh My Kadavule" and the commercially successful Tamil entertainer "Dragon". The filmmaker's association with Rajinikanth has generated considerable interest, particularly given his experience with contemporary storytelling and youthful narratives.

The project is produced by Kamal Haasan and R Mahendran under the banner of Raaj Kamal Films International. The film also carries significance because of the long-standing friendship between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, two of Indian cinema's most celebrated stars.

Speaking at the film's launch, Kamal Haasan recalled a promise the two actors had made decades ago to collaborate on a film, with one producing a project featuring the other. "Dharman" represents a major step towards fulfilling that long-held ambition.

An ensemble cast and a strong technical team

The film already features Simran and Raashii Khanna in important roles, with Yogi Babu also associated with the project. Nayanthara's arrival further strengthens the ensemble.

Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music, continuing his association with Rajinikanth after several high-profile collaborations. The technical team also includes cinematographer Niketh Bommi, editor Pradeep E. Ragav and stunt choreographers Anbariv.

The film began production in June 2026, and the team has completed multiple shooting schedules. A further schedule is expected as the production moves towards completion.

Although the makers have kept the plot details largely under wraps, Rajinikanth's portrayal of a doctor and the action-oriented tone suggested by the promotional material have fuelled speculation about the film's narrative.

With Nayanthara joining the cast, "Dharman" now brings together Rajinikanth's established screen presence, the actress's considerable popularity and Ashwath Marimuthu's contemporary filmmaking approach. An official theatrical release date has yet to be announced.
