A peaceful retired life with his wife Vijaya (Ramya Krishnan), ACP son Arjun (Vasanth Ravi) and his family, was all that former hotshot Tihar jail in-charge Tiger Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth) was hoping for, when writer-director Nelson Dilipkumar first introduced audiences to his protagonist. But with Arjun hot on the heels of a gang of thieves that’s been targeting temples and replacing priceless idols with near-perfect replicas, danger comes knocking on the doors of the Pandian family soon enough.

First, Arjun goes missing. The police department is quick to conclude that he likely took his own life, given how stressful the case has been for him, while his close associates fear he’s been done away with by Varman (Vinayakan), the dreaded gangster who runs the idol replacement operation. Then, Varman’s goons come after the rest of the family, which is the final straw for Muthuvel, who’s been grieving his son’s alleged demise.

Muthuvel goes after Varman and gang with a vengeance; first by himself and then with the help of former Tihar inmates and other gangsters, whose life he had had positively impacted in the past, like Narasimha (Shivarajkumar), Matthew (Mohanlal) and Kamdev (Jackie Shroff). Just as Muthuvel thinks he’s gotten the better of Varman, the latter makes an explosive revelation – Arjun isn’t dead; he’s been held captive.

To secure his son’s freedom, Muthuvel must procure a heavily guarded antique crown, which he does, following an elaborate scheme. In the process, though, Muthuvel makes a heartbreaking discovery; he’s been played by Varman and Arjun. The son that Muthuvel believed to be honest to a tee was conspiring with Varman to make a killing. Money, it turns out, was important to Arjun than his father; a betrayal that Muthuvel dealt with in the only way he knew – by eliminating the source.

With both Varman and Arjun out of the picture, what could now prevent Muthuvel and his family from living in peace? Well, Varman did warn him that he was only a small cog in a large machinery and Jailer 2 is likely to pit Muthuvel against other players in that criminal organization. The trailer hints at the return of Narasimha, Matthew and Kamdev to aid Muthuvel yet again, but this time, the opposition includes characters played by Suraj Venjaramoodu, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and a widely speculated role by Hrithik Roshan, among others.

This time, he won't just be chopping up opponents, he will blast them into oblivion!
