Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju-starrer "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" has created box-office history by entering the Rs 300 crore club worldwide. The Girish AD directorial has now become only the second Malayalam film to cross the prestigious milestone after "Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra".
The Onam release has continued its remarkable theatrical run even in its fourth weekend, turning into one of the biggest Malayalam cinema blockbusters in recent years. According to the latest trade figures, "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" has grossed Rs 301.37 crore worldwide in 23 days, including an India gross of Rs 167.62 crore and an overseas gross of Rs 133.75 crore. Its India net collection stands at Rs 142.05 crore.
The film's week-wise performance highlights the consistency of its theatrical run. It collected around Rs 52.30 crore in its first week and Rs 49.85 crore in the second week, followed by another Rs 33.30 crore in the third week. The film then added Rs 2.50 crore on Day 22 and Rs 4.10 crore on Day 23, taking its worldwide total past the Rs 300 crore mark.

The achievement places "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" in an extremely exclusive club. "Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra", starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, was the first Malayalam film to cross Rs 300 crore worldwide.
Directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan under Wayfarer Films, "Lokah" arrived in August 2025 as an ambitious Malayalam superhero-fantasy film. Rather than depending on an established male superstar, the film built its commercial momentum around Kalyani Priyadarshan's Chandra and a new fantasy universe rooted in Indian mythology and folklore.
"Lokah" eventually crossed the Rs 300 crore mark and finished its theatrical run at around Rs 305.17 crore worldwide, establishing a new benchmark for Malayalam cinema.
The success was particularly significant because it demonstrated the potential of an original, female-led Malayalam superhero film to become a pan-Indian theatrical phenomenon. The film subsequently became the foundation for the planned "Lokah" cinematic universe, with "Lokah Chapter 2" officially announced with Tovino Thomas in the lead.
From "Thudarum" to "Empuraan": Malayalam cinema's box-office expansion
The arrival of another Rs 300 crore grosser comes at a time when Malayalam cinema is experiencing an unprecedented expansion in its theatrical market.
Mohanlal-starrer "Thudarum", directed by Tharun Moorthy, emerged as one of the biggest Malayalam successes of 2025. The family-oriented thriller reportedly finished its worldwide run at around Rs 235 crore, with its Kerala performance being particularly impressive.
Earlier in 2025, "L2: Empuraan", the Prithviraj Sukumaran-directed sequel starring Mohanlal, had pushed Malayalam cinema's commercial ceiling even further. The film recorded a reported worldwide gross of around Rs 265 crore, becoming one of the biggest Malayalam films ever at the time.
"Lokah" subsequently overtook "Empuraan" before becoming the first Malayalam film to cross Rs 300 crore. The trend continued into 2026 with "Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros", which became another major commercial success despite being driven primarily by a younger ensemble cast. The film crossed the Rs 200 crore worldwide mark, becoming only the fifth Malayalam film to achieve that milestone at the time.
"Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" changes the equation again
What makes the success of "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" particularly interesting is that it has achieved this scale with a completely different commercial template from films such as "Empuraan".
Directed by Girish AD, the film stars Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju and has connected strongly with family audiences. Its strong word of mouth, youthful appeal, humour and the chemistry between the lead pair helped the film maintain momentum throughout the Onam season and well beyond its opening week.
The film's Kerala performance has been equally remarkable. It crossed the Rs 130 crore mark in the state in just 22 days and surpassed "Vaazha 2" to become the highest-grossing film in the history of the Kerala box office, according to recent trade reports.
The overseas market has also played a crucial role in its worldwide success. By Day 23, the film had accumulated approximately Rs 133.75 crore from overseas territories alone.
For Nivin Pauly, the achievement is arguably one of the biggest commercial milestones of his career. The actor, who has delivered several memorable successes over the years, has now scored a blockbuster of a scale that places him alongside the biggest contemporary Malayalam box-office performers.
A new era for Malayalam cinema
The rapid succession of major blockbusters has changed the perception of Malayalam cinema's commercial potential. Films such as "Thudarum", "L2: Empuraan", "Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra", "Vaazha II" and now "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" have achieved success through markedly different genres and audience demographics.
From a Mohanlal-led family thriller and a large-scale action franchise to a female-led superhero fantasy and a youth-oriented family entertainer, the recent box-office landscape suggests that Malayalam cinema is no longer dependent on a single formula for blockbuster success.
"Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" now has another significant target in sight. With its worldwide gross already at Rs 301.37 crore, it is just a few crores away from overtaking "Lokah" and potentially becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
The race between "Lokah" and "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit" therefore represents another fascinating chapter in Malayalam cinema's ongoing box-office evolution.
