ON Semiconductor Corp (NASDAQ:ON) introduces three silicon carbide (SiC)-based power modules in transfer molded technology for use in on-board charging and high voltage (HV) DCDC conversion in all sorts of electric cars (xEV). The APM32 series is the first of its type to use SiC technology into a transfer molded packaging to improve efficiency and reduce charging time for xEVs, and it is particularly developed for high-power 11-22kW on-board chargers (OBC).
Share of firm that is leader in intelligent power and sensing technologies surged more than 4.18% to trade at $67.54 in early trading session on Tuesday session, while opening price of share was $64.79.
To handle 800V bus voltage, each of the three modules has minimal conduction and switching losses, as well as best-in-class thermal resistance and high voltage isolation. The increased efficiency and decreased heat generation allow for a more powerful OBC in the end. One that can charge the xEV faster and extend its operational range, both of which are important features for customers.
The VP and GM of onsemi’s Automotive Power Solutions, Fabio Necco stated that their new modules use the latest SiC technology to reduce losses and total system volume, helping designers to satisfy charging efficiency and space targets. By using the pre-configured modular framework, designers may create their solutions more quickly, with much shorter time to market and design risk.
The APM32 modules provide high levels of dependability by using onsemi’s end-to-end SiC supply chain expertise and proven SiC MOSFETs and diodes, and each module is serialized for full traceability. The modules can function at junction temperatures (Tj) as high as 175°C, guaranteeing dependability even in demanding, limited-space automotive applications.
The executive vice president and general manager of onsemi’s Power Solutions Group, Simon Keeton added that APM32 delivers a distinctive solution for their clients by using onsemi’s best-in-class packaging to unleash the full capacity of cutting-edge silicon carbide technology. In addition, they know that supply assurance is important to their clients, which their end-to-end SiC supply chain capabilities enable.
